La tempête tropicale "Dorothy" à la Martinique (20-21 août 1970)

Martinique and the Tropical Storm «Dorothy» On August 20 and 21, 1970, the region of Fort de France and the northwest of Martinique was struck by the tropical storm «Dorothy». In this part of Martinique the passage of the storm was marked by exceptionally heavy rains which fell in a few hours, provoking catastrophic landslides and floods, in particular in the low-lying city of Fort de France. Normally, taking into consideration the trajectory of the tempest which was detected on August 17th at 2 000 km. to the E.S.E. of Martinique, the southeast portion of the island should have been struck instead of the northwest. The author seeks the origin of this phenomenon in the changes of the structure of the storm, which led to a very great vertical ascension of clouds and a dislocation of the cloud group upon approaching the island, one part of the tempest passing by the Sainte Lucie Canal, the other part hitting the island in the northern portion, thus sparing the southeast. The conjunction of a meteorological phenomenon and the presence of high mountains explains the abundance of rains in the northwest half of Martinique. The flooding of the center of Fort de France is due to the basin structure of the city and to the deforestation of the slopes, where the agglomeration does not cease to spread.Les 20 et 21 août 1970, la région de Fort-de-France et le Nord-Ouest de la Martinique ont été frappés par la tempête tropicale «Dorothy». Dans cette partie de la Martinique, le passage de la tempête a été marqué par des pluies exceptionnelles qui sont tombées en quelques heures provoquant des glissements de terrain et des inondations catastrophiques en particulier dans la ville basse de Fort-de-France. Normalement, compte tenu de la trajectoire de la tempête qui avait été détectée te 17 août, à 2 000 km à l'E.S.E. de la Martinique, la moitié S.E. de l'île aurait dû être touchée au lieu du N.O. L'auteur recherche l'origine de ce phénomène dans des modifications de la structure de la tempête qui entraînèrent une très grande ascension verticale des nuages et une dislocation de l'ensemble nuageux à l'approche de l'île — une partie de la tempête passant par le Canal de Sainte-Lucie, l'autre partie abordant l'île dans sa moitié Nord, épargnant ainsi le S.E. — dans la conjonction d'un phénomène météorologique et la présence de reliefs élevés qui expliquent l'abondance des pluies dans la moitié N.O. de la Martinique. L'inondation du centre de Fort-de-France est due à la topographie en cuvette de la ville et au déboisement des pentes où l'agglomération ne cesse de s'étendre .Sirivine Jean-Michel.
